Firefighters are used to receiving strange rescue calls, but an incident that took place in Wildwood, New Jersey this past Sunday tops them all. Local firemen were called in to deal with a…driverless 1970 Ford Thunderbird that was spinning out of control in reverse!

“We never had to deal with a car going in a circle,” Captain Christopher D’Amico told NBC40 news. “We were concerned that it would change trajectory when it was bouncing up on the curb, that the tire would go in an opposite direction and send it into something else,” he explained.

According to the firefighters, the owner of the old Thunderbird got out of the car to switch places with the passenger but the gearshift accidentally slipped into reverse. “Soon as they got out, the car took off, they tried chasing it down, obviously, that’s how the door got opened,” said D’Amico.

Eventually, Captain D’Amico was able to get into the car and turn off the engine. “I got into the inside circle of the car, which was a lot slower and shorter, and the passenger side window was down, I just hoofed myself into the car, shut it off and put it in park. It came to a stop,” he told reporters.

NJ authorities said one unnamed man was slightly injured when he tried to get into the car.
