As in almost every Formula 1 event this year, Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing set the pace again, this time in the second practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix.
What was surprising is that the German pilot’s time was barely better than that of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso – a mere 0.021 seconds. The only one capable of challenging the pair was Lewis Hamilton, but in the end he and his McLaren F1 racer were more than half a second slower.
Alonso tried to keep his feet on the ground despite his much improved pace: “The car is behaving more or less as we expected and is definitely better than in Monza and Spa. But we have to be realistic and not expect any great surprises. The Red Bulls are still favorites and McLaren are also very strong.”
Despite Alsonso’s modesty, facts suggest otherwise: at the end of the practice session, with all cars running on almost full fuel tanks, Ferrari was faster than Red Bull on every lap, setting up the scene for an exciting qualifying session and race.
