The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is big, looks good, is reasonably comfortable and can go quite far off the beaten track. Also, in AMG G63 guise, it’s a force to be reckoned with.
If you don’t faint at the steep starting price of $147,500 (€129,996) in the U.S., or €148,434.65 ($168,401) in Germany, and can instead afford it, you’ll get sports car performance with enough room for the whole family, plus a timeless design that people can’t seem to get enough of.
In addition to the sporty updates both inside and out, the G63 features adaptive damping sports suspension, performance exhaust, a rear-wheel drive-biased all-wheel drive system tuned by AMG, and a powerful engine breathing air from behind the Panamericana grille.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 delivers 577 horsepower (585 PS / 430 kW) and 627 pound-feet (850 Nm) of torque to all four wheels via a smooth-shifting 9-speed auto. Pushing the throttle all the way down gets you from naught to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a startling, for a car of this size, 4.5 seconds, and on to a 149 mph (239 km/h) top speed if you opt with the AMG Driver’s Package. Which of course you will opt for, because you don’t want to be limited to a measly 137 mph (220 km/h), do you?
Now, on paper the planets seem to align for the 2019 AMG G63, but nothing beats a nice video with the driver going pedal to the metal. Mind you, the uploader went as far as measuring not only the sprint time, but also the quarter-mile, and performed a top speed run.
