The new M8 Convertible and X5 M have been spied while testing in Sweden.
We’ve seen test mules of both BMWs on a number of occasions in the past, however this is the first time we’ve seen them driving together on video. The vertical video doesn’t provide us with a detailed look at their exterior designs, but we do get to hear the roar of the X5 M’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the first time.
While filming the M8 Convertible, a X5 M comes into view of the camera car’s wing mirror. It appears to be approaching quite slowly, but as it pulls alongside the camera car, the BMW engineer behind the wheel pins the throttle, sending the big SUV hurtling down the road towards the M8 Convertible. The clip doesn’t only allow us to hear the V8; it also shows that, just like the previous-generation X5 M, the new SUV will offer up truly monumental in-gear acceleration.
Sources tell us that the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the X5 M will pump out roughly 592 HP (600 PS), the same as the latest M5. This should allow the vehicle to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 4 seconds.
Beyond its potent engine, the M Division-prepped SUV will be distinguished from lesser X5 models thanks to a tuned chassis, larger and sportier wheels, bigger brakes, bespoke bumpers and exterior parts and a number of M-specific interior trim.
