Once upon a time, not too long ago, you could count BMW’s model series on one hand. For example, in the 1980s you had the 3-Series, the 5-Series, the 6-Series and the 7-Series.
Nowadays, you need both hands and very soon, that is after the launch of the two i-Series models and the rumored introduction of more nameplates into the range, you’ll probably lose track even if you asked a friend to lend a helping hand…
One of the newest and perhaps most controversial projects BMW is working on now is the development of a new front-wheel drive hatchback currently known by the acronym F.A.S.T. which stands for Family Activity Sports Tourer.
Carscoop’s photographers snagged a prototype of the F.A.S.T., which may or may not be badged as a 1-Series variant as BMW is currently exploring the addition of new nameplates to its range, during testing in Germany.
While the heavy camouflage hides the styling details, it’s clear that the BMW FAST is a tall five-door hatchback that will provide the Bavarian firm with its first van-like model as well a rival to the Mercedes-Benz B-Class.
Underneath the tall body lies a modified version of the BMW Group’s newly developed UKL1 platform that will be launched on the next-generation Mini due in late 2012.
Among other engine options, the small BMW’s lineup is expected to include the the firm’s forthcoming 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel variants.
The BMW FAST will most likely make its first appearance on the motorshow catwalks next year and go on sale towards the end of 2013.
