Volkswagen’s SUV lineup has recently gained two more members: the compact T-Roc and the subcompact T-Cross. The latter, which shares most of its underpinnings with the Polo, is also the most affordable of the range.
In the UK, it costs between £17,000 ($22,303/€19,844) and well over £23,500 ($30,832/€27,431). So, why would anyone pay that much for a jacked-up Polo?
The answer lies in a number of different factors. The T-Cross is one of those cars that looks bigger on the inside than it does on the outside. It also has a rather funky cockpit and a very versatile backseat that slides forwards and backwards. This allows occupants to enjoy plenty of legroom, but cuts down on the boot space, obviously, or the other way around, depending on the position of the rear bench – but at least gives you versatility.

For a subcompact SUV, the T-Cross’ interior looks and feels somewhat premium. The infotainment is easy to use, there’s not much noise coming in from the outside and there’s nothing seriouys to complain about, which means Volkswagen’s designers have done a fine job.
The same can be said about the brand’s engineers, as its steering, braking and overall driving feel are quite good. It sticks quite well in the corners, but don’t think of it as a high-riding Polo GTI, because that’s clearly not the case, nor was it intended to be.
The T-Cross is definitely a lot of car for the money, but is it the best small SUV on sale today? AutoExpress answers this question in their video review which you can watch right after the break.
