McLaren has a pretty comprehensive lineup with three distinct tiers in the Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series, but doesn’t stop at that.

One of the vehicles that’s coming out of Woking in a few months is the Grand Tourer. It was already teased in early March, and was initially thought to debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

However, the automaker chose to skip the event for the unveiling of the “McLaren of Grand Tourers”, as it refers to it. In any case, a man named Alex Alexiev recently spotted it undergoing testing in the United Kingdom – and, naturally, shared the pic on his Instagram account.

The prototype still wears a lot of camouflage on the outside, so apart from the Speedtail-inspired taillights and dual exhaust pipes incorporated into the rear diffuser, nothing gives away its identity. At least it has the right shape to host a mid-mounted engine, so in all likelihood, the cabin has only two seats. Occupants should be surrounded by lots of comfort and luxury features, as the whole purpose of the new McLaren is to become the ultimate Grand Tourer.

Speaking about it last month, CEO Mike Flewitt said that “it will be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful lightweight body”. He added that it “has been designed for distance” and it “will also provide the comfort and space expected of a Grand Tourer”.

While the automaker’s current grand tourer is the 570GT, a slightly more laid back (and, subjectively, beautiful) version of the 570S, the new model will slot in above that and will “share its DNA with the Speedtail”, according to Flewitt.

McLaren will probably unveil its new supercar this summer, before displaying it at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
