Top Gear America has lived a bit of a tortured existence, but it’s coming back thanks to a new partnership between BBC Studios and the MotorTrend Group.
As part of a multi-year agreement, the two companies will jointly produce new seasons of Top Gear America. Little is known about the show, but it is being described as a “digital-first series” that will “deliver a fresh, uniquely American take on the classic Top Gear format.”
That isn’t much to go on, but Top Gear America will have three new hosts and the show will document their “car crazy adventures at home and abroad.” There’s no word on who the hosts are, but production is slated to begin early this summer. The show will then debut on the MotorTrend App – a subscription video-on-demand service – this fall.
Besides the new show, the app will have more than 200 episodes and specials of Top Gear available for streaming. It will also be the “exclusive home to more than 60 fan favorite compilations over the life of the agreement.”
U.S. and Canada fans will be able to access seasons 2–25 of Top Gear UK starting on June 4th. MotorTrend will also promote the collection by showcasing select episodes of Top Gear on MotorTrend TV beginning on June 1st.
MotorTrend Group’s global president and general manager, Alex Wellen, said “We’re thrilled to embrace one of our favorite shows and give audiences unprecedented access to hundreds of hours of Top Gear UK, while also adding some uniquely MotorTrend touches to the franchise.” He went on to say “Top Gear’s brand, stories and personalities are a natural fit for MotorTrend as we continue our mission to embrace, entertain and empower the motoring world.”
