Porsche is planning a major overhaul for its entry-level line of sports cars, including a full-electric version of the next-generation Boxster and Cayman series set to arrive in 2022.

Porsche chairman Oliver Blume confirmed to Autocar that the company is considering adding hybrid and electric powetrains in the 718 replacements.

“We have prototypes of the 718 running in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built,” he said. “If you look to the next generation of those cars it is possible, although it is not yet clear whether it would be plug-in hybrid or hybrid.”

Porsche is currently working on both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the next Boxster and Cayman, alongside their full electric derivatives. Apparently an internal engineering study showcased that lithium-ion battery technology will not be able to provide more than 186 miles (300km) of driving range in the pure electric models without forcing Porsche to make extensive changes to their mid-engine architecture.

The German carmaker is reportedly considering using the new EV-only PPE platform for the electric models of the Boxster and the Cayman, alongside the updated versions of the current cars with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

This will be basically the same strategy Porsche will follow with the next-gen Macan, which is set to continue using the existing MLB architecture with electrification but will switch to the PPE one for its pure EV variant.
