Apart from expanding their portfolio, renewing their lineup and chasing after the electric car segments, Porsche is also considering their next hypercar.

The successor of the 918 Spyder could go one of two different ways when it comes to its exterior design. One solution would be to make it look like an ode to the past, according to Autocar, whereas the other would be a futuristic approach.

The car that started an internal debate is, allegedly, the gorgeous, but sadly stillborn, 917 Concept, which was made in honor of the racer that gave Porsche its first win at Le Mans in 1970.

“When you look at the 917 Concept then, personally, I love it”, said design chief Michael Mauer. “You look at it and you immediately make the connections. But as a designer who believes the next hypercar should point to the future, I’m not sure. There is always the option to look into history, but sometimes you can also take the option to create some history.”

Nothing is clear when it comes to the powertrain either, as CEO Oliver Blume revealed. The Porsche exec admitted that hybrid power is being considered, yet they won’t rule out a battery-electric.

“If we want it to be electric, then we must wait, because battery performance is not where we need it to be in order to meet our performance targets”, Blume explained. “It is not decided though that the car will be fully electric. There are opportunities with hybrid, too. We will make a decision when the time is right.”

Blume previously said that no matter what Porsche has in store for the successor of the 918, the car won’t debut until 2025 at the earliest. By then, the 875 hp 918 Spyder, which can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) and up to 214 mph (345 km/h), will celebrate the 10th anniversary since the last car rolled off the assembly line.
