You may be hard pressed to visually identify the changes over the current version by looking at the above photo, but the Cadillac CTS range has received an update for the 2012 model year that brings a redesigned grille, a revised V6 engine and a new Touring Package edition. The improvements will be carried over to all three CTS models, including the Sedan, the Coupe and the Sport Wagon, with first deliveries expected in late summer.
The visual modifications are limited to the front fascia with the redesigned shield-shaped front grille that gains a new frame and mesh combination, along with an updated version of Cadillac’s Wreath & Crest logo featuring sharper colors and raised ridges for a more three-dimensional look.
The most important change is hidden under the hood as GM refined the 3.6-liter V6 engine for the 2012MY. The Detroit firm’s engineers added larger intake valves and an improved intake port design while also reducing the engine’s weight through a series of measures. These include the use of an integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design, a new composite intake manifold, a lighter-weight structural front cover and different connecting rods that all help to shave 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) over the previous V6.
The latest version of the 3.6-liter V6 is not only much lighter but also more powerful delivering 318HP and 275 lb.-ft. (372 Nm) of torque, compared to the current engine’s 304HP and 273 lb.-ft. (370 Nm), respectively. The EPA fuel economy label will remain 18 city/27 highway mpg.
Along with the new engine and grille, Cadillac is also adding a new Touring Package for 2012. Available in the 3.0L V6 and 3.6L V6 engines, the Touring Package adds a bespoke front grille in a dark finish, dark Sapele wood interior trim and sueded seat inserts, steering wheel and shift knob. The package also comes with chrome door handles, with the 3.0L version featuring 18-inch wheels with a pearl-nickel finish, and the 3.6L model, 19-inch polished wheels and Recaro 14-way adjustable performance seats.
Other improvements for the 2012 model year CTS include standard Bluetooth phone integration on all models and the availability of side blind-zone alert technology on the Coupe version.
