The rumors were true. Volkswagen has set a new electric vehicle lap record on the Nürburgring with their ID.R race car.
Driven by Romain Dumas, the ID.R was able to lap the Nordschleif in 6:05.336 minutes. This demolished the previous record – set by Peter Dumbreck in the NIO EP9 – by 40.564 seconds. That’s an impressive feat made possible by that fact that Dumas had an average speed of 128.59 mph (206.96 km/h).
Following the lap, Dumas said “To be a record-holder on the Nordschleife makes me unbelievably proud. The ID.R was perfectly prepared for the Nordschleife and it was so much fun to experience the blistering acceleration and rapid cornering speeds.”
His sentiments were echoed by Volkswagen chairman Herbert Diess who said “The Nordschleife of the Nürburgring is not only the world’s most demanding race track, it is also the ultimate test for production vehicles. The ID.R has mastered this challenge with great distinction and has completed the fastest emission-free lap of all time.”
Diess went on to congratulate Dumas and say the company can now call its electric vehicle technology Nürburgring-approved. This is important for Volkswagen as it is preparing to launch an assortment of electric vehicles, spearheaded by the ID.3.
This isn’t the ID.R’s first record as the racer has previously set a record of 7:57.148 minutes at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2018. Three weeks later, the model set an electric vehicle record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a time of 43.86 seconds.

As we have previously reported, the ID.R was specially configured for its Nürburgring run. In particular, the car was outfitted with a unique aerodynamics package which focused on allowing higher speeds rather than generating maximum downforce.
Volkswagen also optimized the car’s battery management system. However, it still features a familiar powertrain with two electric motors that produce a combined output of 671 hp (500 kW / 680 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque.
