In California, there is a white 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco which rolls through the streets with a head-turning paint scheme. The car is owned by Jason Whipple.
Whipple, the owner of a California aftermarket wheel company, has spent almost a decade turning his once-stock Scirocco into one outfitted with a multitude of modifications and an eye-catching look.
A peek under the hood reveals a hand-built 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine which pumps out 180 hp and is paired to a new transmission. Inside, much of the cabin has been altered to suit Whipple’s tastes. This means there’s a pair of black Sparco racing seats, blue seat belts, a roll cage in the rear and an aftermarket steering wheel.

Modified Scirocco’s are nothing new and what really distinguishes this one from all others is the paint scheme. Whipple crossed paths with British graphic artist Nicolai Sclater last year and intended on teaming up with him on a skateboard deck design. After hearing about Whipple’s Scirocco, however, Sclater decided he wanted to paint it. Whipple agreed it was a good idea.
“It stemmed from two different ideas. The first was the blurry lettering. I was getting frustrated at how insignificant art is becoming on Instagram and that’s generally where most people are obtaining their art on a daily basis. They are not looking at books or going to museums,” Sclater said. The artist also wanted the paint to act as a call-to-action for people to be more considerate of others and the environment.
Whipple lovingly refers to the car as the ‘Million Dollar Scirocco’ because that’s how much he seemed to be spending on it at the height of the build.
