While you can almost hear the true range-topping member of the new generation BMW Z4, the M40i, going ‘grrr…’, the lesser sDrive30i is a bit more tamed. DTE Systems, however, managed to remove the muzzle by applying their chip tuning box.

The plug-and-play module has lifted the output of the 2.0-liter four (that’s right, the 30i doesn’t have a straight-six anymore) by 24 PS (24 hp / 18 kW) and 66 Nm (49 lb-ft) of torque. The total output produced is 282 PS (278 hp / 207 kW) and 466 Nm (344 lb-ft) of torque.

Aside from improving throttle response, the German roadster is now faster in the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint by around 10 percent, from the stock car’s 5.4 seconds to just a little bit under 5. By comparison, the 340 PS (335 hp / 250 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) 3.0-liter, turbo-six-powered Z4 M40i goes to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds from a standstill.

DTE Systems has also brought chip-tuning into the 21st century, as the module can be controlled via a new smartphone app. Drivers can thus select between three different modes, called Dynamic, Sport and Efficiency, but maximum power is only available when the engine reaches its optimum operating temperature.

Pricing is more than decent, with the tuner asking €229 ($257) for the regular Pedal Box and €259 ($290) for the feature with the smartphone app, shipping included, and offers a 30-day, money-back guarantee.

Scrolling through their website we also found two other software upgrades: one for for the sDrive20i, which improves acceleration by more than 10 percent, and one for the M40i, which adds another 57 PS (56 hp / 42 kW) and 80 Nm (59 lb-ft) to the packag while also improving fuel consumption by up to 15 percent. The former has an identical price tag to the upgrade for the sDrive30i, whereas the latter costs nearly €800 ($897) in its most advanced form.
