The new Toyota Supra landed earlier this year and it is finally time to see how it shapes up against its European opposition.
Autocar recently jumped into the driver’s seat of a white Supra over in the UK and lined it up against a BMW M2 Competition, Porsche 718 Cayman T, and Alpine A110 for some fun on a racetrack. Each of these four are two-door sports cars but they do differ in a number of (significant) ways.
For starters, the Alpine and Porsche are both mid-engined while the M2 Competition and Supra have their engines mounted up front. This means they handle quite differently. Additionally, the Alpine is the most ‘hardcore’ and stripped-back car of the quartet and while that makes it exceptionally fun to drive on a circuit, it is somewhat compromised for everyday use.

In terms of power, it is the M2 Competition which has the most grunt, by some margin in fact. It’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine borrowed (but detuned) from the M3 delivers 404 hp. By comparison, the Cayman T pumps out 296 hp, the Supra has 335 hp, and the Alpine has 248 hp.
The British magazine concludes that all four are absolutely exceptional and picking an outright winner is difficult. All are very enjoyable to drive but each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. We won’t tell you which of the cars gets the nod as the best of the pack but will say that they are all quite evenly matched and worth investigating for anyone in the market for a sports car.
