Mitsubishi Won’t Bring Back The Lancer Evolution – Or Will It?

Ever since the Lancer Evolution was killed off, Mitsubishi has lacked any models one could consider ‘exciting.’ That, however, despite the company’s recent policy, might just change in the future.

Citing unnamed “Japanese-based sources”, Autocar claims that Mitsubishi is planning to revive the Lancer Evolution and build an 11th-generation model. This flies in the face of previous reports indicating that the Evo was gone for good – but still…

The (supposed) logic goes that Mitsubishi wants to spice up its lineup and claw its way back into the performance car ranks. It is claimed that such a vehicle could be based on the CMF-C/D F4 platform from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and technology could actually be shared with the next-generation Megane RS.

This would mean the new Evo could be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a dual-clutch transmission, while the addition of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system could result in somewhere around 341 hp and 319 lb-ft of torque in standard specification. If the legendary Evo were to return, it would likely also be offered in even faster forms.

The possibility of the Evolution making a comeback hinges on whether or not Mitsubishi will revive the Lancer in international markets. Earlier this year, reports suggested that, if the nameplate were to return, it would likely only do so as a hatchback or a small crossover perhaps inspired by the e-Evolution concept.
