A 2020 Porsche 911 GT3 prototype experienced a breakdown during recent testing at Germany’s Nurburgring, providing our spy photographers with the perfect opportunity to snap pictures of the car up close.

Limited details about what caused this 911 GT3 prototype to pull over onto the grass in the Hatzenbach section of the track are known.

Obviously, Porsche isn’t going to say what the issue was and these photos show the sports car stranded on the side of the track while other prototypes continued to lap the track. They included a Chevrolet C8 Corvette.

This GT3 prototype, like most others we’ve seen testing recently, features a towering rear wing dominated by a pair of thick uprights. Viewed up close, it is striking just how ‘temporary’ the wing looks with duct tape appearing to help hold the wing to the uprights. Additionally, prominent air intakes on the rear decklid can be seen gulping down air for the vehicle’s naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine.

Our spy photographers also snapped a sticker placed on the side of the Porsche which says there are wings on the car’s underbody and that care must be taken when loading it into a truck. In short, this means the new GT3 will feature some kind of movable flaps to help with aerodynamics, likely to reduce drag at high speeds and improve downforce during cornering.

Powering the new GT3 will be a six-cylinder engine, as mentioned. This powertrain is tipped to displace 4.0-liters and like all of its predecessors, will be extremely high-revving. Power figures remain unconfirmed but the car could punch out around 520 hp, a frightening number for a car with only six cylinders and no form of forced induction.

Porsche hasn’t said when the 992-generation 911 GT3 will premiere but it could be as soon as September’s Frankfurt Auto Show. A wingless Touring variant is then expected to premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020.
