Following a recent report that the Camaro will be killed in 2023, there had been hope Chevy would send off its muscle car with a hardcore Z/28 variant. That, however, no longer seems to be the case.
According to Muscle Cars and Trucks, Chevrolet was indeed working on a new Z/28 that would have slotted above the Camaro ZL1 1LE in the range’s lineup and send out the sixth-gen Camaro in style.
However, unnamed sources claim that the plug has been pulled on this project, meaning that for the next four years, the Camaro will only get a handful of updates and special packages.
Chevrolet had apparently started work on the new Z/28’s powertrain when General Motors culled the project as part of its restructuring plan at the end of 2018.

If the new Camaro Z/28 had seen the light of day, it would have been something very special. Chevrolet was reportedly readying the car with a bespoke engine dubbed the LT3. This powertrain would have displaced 6.6 liters and been naturally aspirated. Sure, it likely would have had less power than the supercharged V8s of the ZL1 and ZL1 1LE, but it would have revved higher and help ensure the Z/28 was the lightest model in the Camaro family.
The fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in early 2013 and came with a 7.0-liter naturally aspirated LS7 V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It had Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires measuring 305/30 at all four corners and advanced Multimatic DSSV spool valve dampers. A new Z/28 likely would have been even better but, sadly, it wasn’t to be.
Carscoops has contacted Chevrolet to see if the new Z/28 has indeed been cancelled and we shall report once we receive a response, though we think that the special Camaro is, indeed, not going to happen after all.
