2020 Corvette C8: GM Claims It Has Yet To Test Its Top Speed

GM took off the covers to the 2020 Corvette Stingray late last week, but it has yet to announce any performance specifications.

Speaking during the car’s launch, Chevrolet confirmed that it will accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under three seconds in Z51 guise – but that’s all we know so far. When it comes to the car’s top speed, not even the carmaker itself knows what the new Corvette is capable of. Or so they say…

Speaking with members of the press at the car’s debut, GM president Mark Reuss said Chevrolet still needs to “test” the top speed of the C8.

Looking at the top speeds of various C7 Corvette models offers us an indication of where the C8’s top speed will roughly sit. Given enough room, the entry-level C7 Stingray can accelerate through to an impressive 187 mph (301 km/h), while the Z51 Performance Package gets 186 mph (299 km/h) due to the added drag created by the various downforce-enhancing aero parts.

Whereas the C7 Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 pumps out 455 HP, the engine fitted to the entry-level C8 Stingray offers up 490 HP. However, peak power isn’t the only important thing for a vehicle’s top speed. As GM Authority points out, the gearing of the C8 will largely determine how fast it will go and, so far, Chevrolet has yet to offer any details about the gearing of the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

If we were to guess, we’d say the entry-level C8 Corvette’s top speed will probably sit at around 190 mph (305 km/h). Which, for a s$60k car, is more than enough (and what anyone should ever need…).
