The world’s media recently had the opportunity to test out the new Mercedes-AMG A 45 S for the very first time, and this video review reveals what you probably could have guessed: that it is extremely capable.

The headline of the new A 45 S, as well as the lesser A 45 (and the CLA 45 / 45 S) is the new M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. In range-topping specification, this engine pumps out an impressive 415 HP and is coupled to an eight-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission sending power to the tarmac via a fully variable Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.

Mercedes-AMG says the new A 45 S will hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in a mere 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h). Those are very impressive figures indeed, though they only tell part of the story.

Incorporated into the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system is the AMG Torque Control system which uses two electronically controlled multidisc clutches to control the amount of torque sent to each individual rear wheel. This means the potent hot hatch has impeccable handling and is capable of some rather impressive feats. In fact, the reviewer in this video says that it virtually lacks any understeer.

Another interesting thing about the A 45 S is that it features a ‘Drift Mode’, not too dissimilar to what the one in the Ford Focus RS, that adds a level of excitement the (admittedly very good) previous iteration lacked.
