The Reason Why A C8 Corvette Prototype Used A Cadillac Key Fob

In November last year, photos surfaced online from The Drive depicting a Cadillac key fob featuring buttons that appeared to show the mid-engined C8 Corvette Convertible.

The emergence of these images sparked speculation that Cadillac would get its own version of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and soon have a vehicle that would act as the perfect spiritual successor to the Cadillac XLR. Not so fast.

According to GM Authority, the reason why there was a C8 Corvette key fob with a Cadillac badge floating around can be easily explained. It is claimed that half-way through the development of the new C8 Corvette, General Motors decided the car should be underpinned by its new Global B electrical architecture and this is thought to be why development of the car was significantly delayed.

The only other GM product to currently use the Global B electronic architecture is the latest Cadillac XT5 and the publication asserts that the mysterious key in question was simply an XT5 key fob that had been re-purposed for use with a specific 2020 Corvette C8 prototype. The 2020 XT5 does indeed use the same key as said C8 Corvette prototype did but does feature different buttons with other  graphics.

While this report appears to refute claims that Cadillac will produce its own version of the C8 Corvette, there is still some (hopeful) speculation that a Cadillac supercar will see the light of day as part of Chevrolet’s potential plan to spin-off the Corvette into a separate brand that could see the launch of both SUV and sedan Corvette models.
