The owner of an Mk4 Toyota Supra is part-way through an ambitious engine swap project that involved fitting a massive 5.9-liter Cummins diesel inline-six engine into the Japanese sports car.
Writing on social media, the owner, Ashley Whitsey, says he purchased the car in early April 2017 as a rolling shell. At one stage, his Supra was powered by the desirable twin-turbo 2JZ engine with a six-speed manual transmission but the enthusiast decided against trying to source a standard powertrain and has embarked on a slightly more unique project.

Whitsey has been detailing the ongoing build of the car for approximately two and a half years on the Retro Rides forums and it appears to be nearing completion. The photos of the vehicle absolutely boggle the mind.
The first thing to note about the diesel engine being installed into the Supra is that it’s absolutely massive and sitting next to the Toyota, actually looks too big. However, some creative tinkering has allowed the owner to mount the powertrain into the car’s engine bay. There has even been enough room to add a huge turbocharger.
Working alongside the 5.9-liter inline-six diesel engine is a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a Lexus LS400 rear differential with shortened axles. The vehicle doesn’t appear to be running just yet but the owner has ensured it looks the part by painting it matte black and slapping on a set of huge off-road wheels and tires. There’s even a large cage mounted to the roof.
