GMC Claims It Has No Plans For Sub-Terrain Small Crossover

GMC says it has no intention of launching a crossover to slot below the current Terrain in its SUV lineup.

For quite some time, there has been speculation that the car manufacturer was contemplating a new entry-level crossover dubbed the Granite. It was believed that such a vehicle could use the same VSS-F platform as the Buick Encore GX and Chevrolet Trailblazer and be inspired by the Granite Concept which was displayed back in 2010.

Curious to discover whether or not GMC does indeed plans to roll out such a model, GM Authority reached out to GMC Canada regional marketing manager, Mark Alger, and was told that no such model is in the works.

“I’m going to give you a definitive no on that one. We want to position GMC as a premium brand, focus on our trucks and capitalize on the AT4 name,” Alger responded. “We recently announced that we’ll be opening up the AT4 variant to all our products. This is where our focus is at right now.”

A couple of years ago, the head of the Buick and GMC brands, Duncan Aldred, told the media that expanding the GMC brand into the small SUV segment would make sense, but the latest statements indicate that GM has had a change of heart.

On the one hand, this is odd, because sales of small SUVs and crossovers are currently booming. At the same time, it also make sense as GM may be concerned such a model would steal sales from the Encore GX and the Trailblazer.
