Despite all manufacturers, including those of exotics, embracing downsizing, Pagani has confirmed that its V12 engines aren’t going anywhere.

The Italian car manufacturer recently unveiled the long-awaited Huayra BC Roadster which, like all Huayras, features a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 from Mercedes-AMG.

Speaking to Autocar recently, Horacio Pagani confirmed that the Huayra’s successor, known internally as the C10 and expected to launch in 2022, will continue to feature a V12.

“This next model will have a similar philosophy. It will have a traditional combustion engine, a new-generation Mercedes-AMG V12 twin-turbo,” he said. “We have a very close relationship with Mercedes already and this new V12 engine will be homologated until 2026.”

This is very good news for enthusiasts and prospective customers, who may have thought the car manufacturer would be forced to either downsize its engines or embrace hybridization to meet the ever-tightening emissions standards. This isn’t to say they are totally shying away from electrification, though.

Pagani has previously confirmed that it is also developing an all-electric model that will be sold alongside the Huayra’s successor. Details about this car are limited, but it will be based on a modified C10 platform.

In other news, Horacio Pagani admitted that the niche automaker has given some thought to building an SUV, but isn’t sold on the idea just yet.

“If I had to come up with a Pagani SUV, it would need to have a price tag of €3 million or above to be in line with our current strategy. We don’t know if there is any market for such a product, but there could not be any compromise,” he said.

“If there is a Pagani badge on a vehicle, it must be the highest quality. But it is something that has been discussed a number of times with collectors. We would access the technology of Mercedes-Benz because they produce SUVs, and because of the close relationship we enjoy, we could maybe use the big SUV platform. It’s something that has been in the back of my mind, but the journey from concept to reality for anything like that is a long one.”
