Polestar Unveils Huge Chinese Production Facility For The Polestar 1

Polestar has just opened its expansive production facility in Chengdu, China where it will shortly commence production of the Polestar 1.

The Polestar Production Centre aims to be one of the most environmentally-responsible car factories in China and sits in the heart of Chengdu’s manufacturing base.

Not only will the facility handle production of the Polestar 1 but it also includes a large customer experience center, a glazed atrium, and a test track. The site was designed by architecture and design company Snøhetta.

“Designing Polestar’s first production facility has been a challenging and extremely rewarding project for us,” Snøhetta co-founder Kjetil Trædal Thorsen said. “The innovative design of the interaction scheme aligns creative visionary processes with technical production requirements, setting a new standard for inclusive fabrication facilities.”

Polestar intends on building 500 examples of the 1 each year at the site over the following three years but, interestingly, the forthcoming Polestar 2 won’t be built but in a different facility located in Luqiao, China from early 2020.

“Here in Chengdu we are not only manufacturing a premium hybrid-electric performance car. We have also created an inspirational manufacturing environment, a great place to work and visit. It truly reflects the Polestar brand,” Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath said about the site.

Powering the Polestar 1 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharger four assisted by two electric motors on the rear axle. The powertrain delivers a total of 592 HP and 738 lb-ft (1000 Nm) of torque and allows for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in approximately 4 seconds, while the 34 kWh battery pack is good for an all-electric driving range of 93 miles (150 km).
