If you want to go speeding through a desert and jumping over sand dunes, the Ford F-150 Raptor is the perfect vehicle for you. However, if you want a vehicle that is blisteringly quick on a long piece of tarmac, you’d better look elsewhere.

Powering the F-150 Raptor is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 delivering 450 HP and 510 lb-ft (691 Nm) of torque. To see what kind of performance those figures translate to on an abandoned airstrip, a Raptor owner headed to the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds to put it to the test.

Off the line, the F-150 Raptor gets to 62 mph (100 km/h) reasonably fast for a vehicle of its size and goes strong until 107 mph (172 km/h) without breaking a sweat. However, once it hits that mark, it runs into an electronic speed limiter that prevents it from going any faster. A previous test of a 2018 model year F-150 Raptor with this limiter removed showed it could reach 134 mph (215 km/h).

According to recent reports, though, Ford is readying a range-topping version with the same 760 HP, 5.2-liter supercharged V8 as the new Shelby Mustang GT500. This model will directly rival the upcoming Ram Rebel TRX that is set to receive the 707 HP, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 from the Dodge Hellcat twins.
