Mercedes-Benz is on a roll with their electrified EQ sub-brand. They’ve already launched the EQV and EQC with 10 more models yet to come.
However, one model of particular interest is its flagship EV, called the EQS. Think of it as the S-Class of EVs.
So, what can we expect in terms of design, underpinnings, and performance? Let’s take a spy-shot based, illustrated sneak-peak before those covers are officially lifted later this year.
Sensual Styling
Whereas the S-Class is a traditional three-box sedan, the EQS adopts a cab-forward, lift-back style silhouette with curvaceous bodywork devoid of sharp, aggressive creases. There’s a reminiscent mix of CLS and EQC in the front end, with trapezoidal LED headlights and a faux grille panel.

Perhaps the most dramatic view is its side profile – a sleek, egg-shaped greenhouse coupled with frameless windows gives the impression that it’s ready to pounce. To this writer’s mind, it even looks lower and sleeker than the four-door AMG GT. At the rear, it’s all about lift-back practicality combined with sleek LED taillights and, curiously, faux exhaust cutouts.
Sumptuous Accommodation
As the flagship of Mercedes-Benz’s electric car range, expect the interior to be even more sumptuous and technologically advanced than that of the S-Class. As an EV, one advantage over its ICE-powered sibling (apart from the absence of noise by the engine) is in interior packaging, so the EQS will provide more occupant space within a CLS-sized footprint.

Mercedes has already released several CGI renders and sketches of what is widely believed to be the Frankfurt Motor Show-bound EQS study’s interior, describing it as “a glimpse into the not-so-distant future.” In other words, it’s an overly futuristic vision designed to draw attention from show-goers, but it does give us a good idea of the styling direction it will follow on the production car.

As with the upcoming S-Class, the EQS will feature a massive MBUX-powered touchscreen coupled to auxiliary displays and a host of infotainment and semi-autonomous driving assist features. Along with customizable LED ambient lighting, there’ll be a vast array of storage cubbies and massage functions for front and rear occupants.

Platform And Powertrain
The EQS will sit on a completely new platform called MEA2 (Mercedes Electric Architecture 2). Contrary to conjecture, this is different to the underpinnings of the EQC SUV,which happens to be an adaptation of the MHA platform that also supports ICE vehicles.
Whilst exact numbers are yet to be revealed, we anticipate the EQS to feature all-wheel-drive, with an electric motors on each axle. Total combined power will likely exceed the EQC’s 402 HP and 564 lb-ft of torque, with a range north of 300 miles (~480 km) on a single charge. DC fast-charging will enable the battery to reach an 80 percent charge in 40 minutes.

Rivals And Reveal
The EQS will compete against the likes of Tesla’s well-known, albeit ageing Model S (though we should point out that Mercedes is rumored to be readying a smaller EQE electric sedan priced directly against the Model S), Porsche’s new Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, Jaguar’s next-generation XJ EV and, possibly, an in-house rival in the form of a hybrid-electric variant of the next S-Class.

Stuttgart plans to preview the EQS with a study at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, before introducing the production version later next year, with sales to follow shortly after.
