Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a recall for just under 3,500 new Jeep Gladiator models over improperly lubricated driveshafts.
A recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that certain 2020 MY Gladiators built from December 15, 2018 through June 25, 2019 may have a rear driveshaft that has been assembled without grease in the monoblock joint.
The NHTSA notes that a monoblock joint without grease could overheat and seize and, ultimately, fracture the driveshaft. This could result in a loss of power if the Gladiator is in rear-wheel drive mode and the driveshaft could separate from the vehicle entirely, potentially triggering a crash. It is indicated in the recall that some customers may experience a noise or vibration prior to the driveshaft fracturing.
FCA first became aware of the issue in June, when it received four rear driveshafts from warranty repairs that were sent to it for analysis. It was determined that they were all assembled without grease in the monoblock joint. A total of 3,427 vehicles are affected by the recall, and the company estimates that roughly 5 per cent of them could actually have the issue.
To fix it, technicians will simply fit a new rear driveshaft that has had its monoblock joint properly greased. FCA will also reimburse any Gladiator owners who have already paid for repairs.
Dealerships and owners will be notified if their vehicles are involved in the recall on or about October 18.
