Scary dashcam footage has been published online that shows a high-speed chase involving a woman in Michigan who stole a police cruiser in early July.

The Detroit Free Press reports that 24-year-old Destiny Hawkins took an interest in a Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle on July 5 as an officer attended to a pedestrian who had been struck on the sidewalk on Woodward Avenue at 9 Mile in Ferndale. The officer’s body camera showed the woman, believed to be homeless, jump in the SUV and speed off.

Local police were deployed to chase Hawkins and claim she reached speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h). The shocking video shows the moment the woman sped off in the Tahoe and captured the entirety of the chase. Hawkins can be seen stopping at select red lights while driving through others. It is claimed that a fully-loaded AR-15 was in the passenger seat of the police cruiser.

The chase lasted for approximately 15-minutes and this clip also includes dashcam footage from three of the police cruisers chasing the Chevrolet. Hawkins eventually crashed the Tahoe, slamming into the rear of another Chevrolet SUV near an intersection. The police cruiser came to a rest nearby where authorities promptly arrested her.

“She presented some indications of mental illness. All through the booking process, she gave peculiar answers, and some peculiar non-answers, you might say,” Sgt. Baron Brown said regarding the arrest. “We have no indication at all that she was high on anything.”

Approximately a week after the pursuit, the 24-year-old was ordered to stand trial. She was hit with a felony charge of auto theft and third-degree fleeing and eluding.
