A study conducted by Smith’s Lawyers has determined that male drivers are much prone to distracted driving than females.

The survey involved 2,214 drivers aged 18-65 in the United States. It was revealed that 70 per cent of them engage in some form of distracting activity while driving – and men that are the worst offenders.

For one, men are 22 per cent more likely to use a smartphone while driving and 74 per cent more likely to attempt driving with their knees. Additionally, they are 70 per cent more likely to watch videos behind the wheel and 260 per cent (!) more likely than females to check out pedestrians.

One area where both sexes are equally bad is driving while consuming hot food or drinks. In the study, 58.9 per cent male and 58.2 female respondents said they did consume drinks and food while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations says the odds of crashing go up 80 per cent when foods and drinks are being consumed by drivers and that 65 per cent of close calls on the road are due to food and drink-related distractions.

The study also breaks down in which areas of the U.S. drivers are most likely to engage in some form of distracted driving. States in the west, such as California, Nevada, Arizona and Colorado, account for the majority of drivers using phones, while Midwest states, like Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Iowa, have the highest number of motorists attempting to drive with their knees.

While all of the above are dangerous, we can see how one might be tempted to talk on their cellphone, drink a beverage or eat something while driving. Attempting to steer a vehicle with your knees, though? Talk about asking for trouble…
