Even though the 2021 Formula 1 rule changes will bring about more aggressive-looking cars with aeroplane-like front wings and larger wheels, we reckon we’re so far away from motorsport taking to the skies that renderings such as this one can be quite comical.

However, that doesn’t mean that we as a society won’t at one point reach a stage where technology will allow for more exciting racing to be conducted a few inches above the track.

Such a feat could be accomplished with the help of advanced propulsion technologies such as futuristic rapid-motion propellers and perhaps even some type of booster rocket tech.

Take this rendering by Olcay Tuncay Karambulut as an interesting example of what our grand kids might grow up to call a Formula 1 race car. It is based on a modern-day Ferrari, yet features four propellers and two boosters attached to the engine cover.

Also, saying grand kids instead of kids is by no means an exaggeration. Technology rarely progresses as fast as people think, especially in key fields. So having flying cars that are also technological masterpieces in terms of performance, probably won’t even happen until the 2100s – if ever.

As for sky racing not being as exciting as what we have going on today, well, there’s literally no way we could know that for sure. Advanced quadcopter tech might actually mean better maneuverability, especially around “tight corners”.

We would also add that if such a design (propulsion-wise) will ever become reality, there’s little chance that the car itself could keep today’s fixed front and rear wing aesthetic.
