BMW has quietly announced the 2020 X5 M and X6 M will be unveiled at this weekend’s DTM race at the Hockenheim.
The company didn’t say much about the upcoming models, but confirmed the X5 M will have a combined fuel consumption of between 12.8 – 13.0 L/100km (18- 18.3 mpg US / 21.7 – 22 mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 291 – 296 g/km. Likewise, the X6 M will consume 12.5 – 12.7 L/100 km (18.5 – 18.8 mpg US / 22.2 – 22.6 mpg UK) and have CO2 emissions of 284 – 289 g/km.
That isn’t much to go on, but both models are expected to have a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. That’s a slight increase over the outgoing models which were rated at 567 hp (422 kW / 575 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.
Of course, the big news is the addition of Competition variants which were teased last month. They’re expected to have an upgraded V8 engine that produces 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.
While BMW has been tight-lipped about the high-performance crossovers, previous photos have shown the models will have an aggressive front bumper with angular air intakes that feature honeycomb mesh inserts. Other highlights include a sportier rear fascia, lightweight alloy wheels and a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system.
Interior changes will be relatively minor, but drivers will find an M-branded three-spoke steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and alloy pedals. There should also be a revised instrument cluster and a handful of other M-specific touches.
