Sebastian Vettel’s race came to a frustrating end in Sochi after the MGU-K on his car failed shortly after a pitstop. The four-time F1 world champion was then instructed to pull over and stop his car immediately in order to not risk further damage to his turbocharged hybrid engine.

That’s when the German driver got on the radio and delivered the following nugget to his crew as millions of viewers watched: “Bring back the f***ing V12s.”

After cooling down, Vettel was asked whether his retirement in Russia had prompted him to reconsider staying in Formula 1, as reported by Autosport.

“There’s no series like Formula 1 with V12s, otherwise I would consider! But no, I mean, obviously there’s no option. These power units are very complex. I think from an engineering point of view, very fascinating, but obviously I have my stand on it, and I don’t think it comes with a great upside for us racing, and people watching.”

Because of where Vettel was forced to stop his car, F1 officials had to engage the virtual safety car, which in turn cost his teammate, Charles Leclerc, the win.

“In that moment obviously it was very bitter, because up to that point I thought I drove very well, and it was looking like a good afternoon,” added the German.

“Then obviously the first reaction when the car sort of breaks down is always not the happiest one.”

Does Vettel have a point though? Would Formula 1 racing be more exciting if they somehow (and inexplicably) brought back V12 engines? At least there would be fewer things that could go wrong with the power unit.
