The all-new GLE is a rather extraordinary technological showcase for the German car manufacturer and was recently reviewed by Yuri and Jakub from The Straight Pipes.
Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new GLE late last year, and in mid-range GLE 450 4MATIC guise, it features a suspension system unlike any other on the market. Dubbed ‘E-Active Body Control’, it works in conjunction with the car’s 48-volt electrical system and Airmatic air suspension and includes a free-driving mode that sees the car bounce up and down if it becomes bogged. It effectively turns the GLE into a low-rider and you don’t even need to be off-road to use it.

Another interesting feature of the 2020 GLE is the ‘Curve’ mode. This is the latest version of the firm’s Magic Body Control system that was first introduced in the S-Class Coupe in 2014 as the ‘Active Curve Titling’. In the new GLE, it allows the SUV to tilt up to 3 degrees into a turn to counter any body roll, and works remarkably well.
The GLE 450 model uses a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine joined to a 48-volt mild hybrid system to deliver a total of 367 HP and 358 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. An EQ Boost function adds an extra 22 HP and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) for short bursts. A 9G-tronic automatic transmission is standard on all GLE models and incorporates a transfer case with an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch that allows for a variable transfer of torque between the axles.
