F1’s Toro Rosso To Become Alpha Tauri Starting Next Year

Following Minardi’s change of ownership back in 2005, the outfit became known as Scuderia Toro Rosso, which of course is a direct Italian translation of “Team Red Bull”.

Now, Reuters has learned that all the other Formula 1 teams agreed via an email vote to let the Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso outfit compete under a new name starting next season. Thus, the team will reportedly be known as Alpha Tauri.

In case that sounds familiar, it’s because Alpha Tauri is a fashion brand (launched two years ago) that is also owned by the Austrian energy drink giant. As for where the name originally came from, that would be a star in the Taurus constellation, also known as Aldebaran (one of the easiest stars to find in the night sky due to its brightness).

Scuderia Toro Rosso’s first season in Formula 1 was in 2006, when they raced under Cosworth V10 power. The following year, they switched to Ferrari V8 engines and in 2008, Sebastian Vettel won the Italian Grand Prix in a Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso – a rare occasion of a Ferrari-powered outfit outracing the works team.

Now, Toro Rosso utilizes Honda power and is currently sixth in the 2019 Constructor Standings with 59 points, 5 points clear of Racing Point and 18 points shy of 5th place Renault.

With Red Bull principal Christian Horner saying that a 2020 seat with the main team is “Albon’s to lose”, this means that next year, the Alpha Tauri team will likely field a driver lineup consisting of Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly.
