The latest prototype of BMW’s G80-generation M3 has been filmed while testing at the Nurburgring.

Production of the previous M3 ended roughly 12 months due to emissions regulations, but the German company is clearly taking its time perfecting the new one, despite now having a gap in its family of M models. This prototype, like many others seen in recent months, is clad in camouflage to hide its design. Unfortunately for BMW, we already have a good idea of what the sports sedan will look like.

Viewed from the front, the new M3 will look similar to the recent BMW Concept 4 and feature a huge kidney grille that is sure to ruffle more than a few feathers, along with headlights distinct to those of lesser 3-Series. As for the rear end, a recently leaked image of the new M3 revealed a small bootlid lip spoiler, a color-matching diffuser (likely optional), and quad tailpipes.

The new M3 will be powered by the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder as the new X3 M and X4 M. Base models will deliver 473 HP, while the M3 Competition will pump out 503 HP. Identical figures can be expected for the base M4 and M4 Competition, respectively.

This engine doesn’t produce the most evocative sound on earth, and some enthusiasts may be disappointed with just how quiet the new car sounds in this clip. However, there’s a chance this prototype doesn’t feature the production-spec exhaust system.

BMW is expected to unveil the new M3 in 2020 before production commences later in the year.
