While most of us dream of having an insanely powerful car to cruise the streets at the end of the week and perhaps race at the local track every now and then, others have invested huge sums into what used to be their daily rides.
The fourth generation Volkswagen Golf normally goes for a few hundred euros in its homeland today. This one, though, is a bit more valuable, as it’s the range-topping R32, powered by a VR6 engine that puts out 240 horsepower.
By today’s standards, that is subcompact hot hatch territory – the compact class has evolved wildly, with the most powerful exceeding 400 horsepower and most of the rest hovering around the 300 mark.

But don’t underestimate this old Golf just yet, as according to the description of the video shared at the bottom of the page, it boasts a massive 1,150 horsepower and 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft) of torque. While that number is impossible to verify, the footage alone should be enough proof to convince you that it would probably humiliate most modern supercars in a drag race.
In one of the runs, the wildly tuned Golf was clocked at 305.38 km/h (189.75 mph) during a half-mile acceleration, completing it in 17.03 seconds. By comparison, an old Golf Mk2 that we covered last year that had over 1,300 horsepower ran the same distance in 17.3 seconds, at 333.33 km/h (207.12 mph), so yes, the quoted output of this Mk4 does seem legit.
