Hyundai Motor America is embracing electrification as the company has announced plans to more than double its eco-friendly lineup by 2022.
The automaker was coy on specifics, but confirmed they will introduce “13 alternatively fueled vehicles by 2022.” These upcoming models will be offered with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric powertrain.
Among the upcoming models are six sedans and seven crossovers. Some have already been announced, with one of them being the 2020 Sonata Hybrid. The US-spec model will be introduced early next year, but it should echo the Korean variant which has a 2.0-liter petrol engine, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. This setup gives the sedan a combined output of 192 HP(143 kW / 195 PS) and a combined fuel economy of 20.1 km/L (47.2 mpg US / 4.97 L/100 km).

Besides the Sonata Hybrid, Hyundai’s eco-friendly lineup will include the facelifted Ioniq Electric, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid which are set to celebrate their US debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The models feature a host of changes, but some of the biggest updates occur on the Ioniq Electric as it has a larger battery pack and a more powerful onboard charger.
The remaining nine models will be rolled out over the course of the next three years. Nothing is official, but one of them could be a Tucson Hybrid, as the redesigned crossover is expected to be offered with the same powertrains as the Sonata.
Hyundai Motor America Vice President, Product, Corporate and Digital Planning, Mike O’Brien, commented: “As the automotive industry evolves to meet the needs of a diverse customer base and environmentally-aware society, we will continue to provide alternative-propulsion options in a variety of product choices.”
