Lyft has rolled-out 200 electric vehicles in Denver as part of its Express Drive rental program for drivers.
This is the ride-hailing giant’s largest single deployment of EVs to date and the largest in Colorado’s history, and will enable more Lyft drivers to choose EVs as opposed to fossil-fuel powered vehicles.
Lyft offers these vehicles as rentals because electric vehicles can be quite expensive and out of the price range of many drivers on the company’s platform. EVs are particularly practical for ride-hailing drivers because they cover so many miles and need to cover all of their fuel expenses. Lyft says renters of its Express Drive program save approximately $70-$100 per week on fuel costs alone with an EV.
Lyft Attack: Lyft Makes Its Self-Driving Research Data Available To The Public
Lyft wants to make every ride on its platform 100 per cent electric over time and is starting to do so in forward-thinking areas such as Colorado where state and local leaders are accelerating EV adoption by improving existing incentive programs to better allow ridesharing rental programs to participate at scale.
In the past year, the company has been one of the world’s largest voluntary purchasers of carbon offsets to make every Lyft ride carbon neutral.
The 200 electric vehicles from Lyft will start hitting the streets of Denver in December, though it has yet to be revealed what vehicles will make up the EV fleet.
