The BMW M2 Competition may no longer by the ultimate driver-focused M model on the market following the arrival of the M2 CS, but this video proves it’s still extremely impressive when taken to a racetrack.

To see what the M2 Competition is capable of, Sport Auto took an orange example to the Hockenheimring GP circuit in Germany. The publication opted for the six-speed manual model as opposed to the dual-clutch model, and fitted a fresh set of Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires.

Perfect Performance For The Road: We’ll Have A BMW M2 Competition With McChip’s 592 HP Upgrade, Thank You Very Much!

In cold conditions, the M2 Competition lapped the track in a best time of 1:57.6. To put that time into perspective, it is almost two seconds slower than the new BMW M2 CS and Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 but does beat out the likes of the Audi TT RS Performance, Toyota Supra, BMW Z4 M40i, Porsche 718 Boxster T and Mercedes-AMG A45 S.

Powering the M2 Competition is the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder first used in the M3 and M4. It pumps out 405 HP, which is very impressive for a car that with a $58,900 starting price in the U.S.

By comparison, the 2020 M2 CS sports an uprated version of the same engine with 444 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. The M2 CS also features new Adaptive M suspension, a sports exhaust system, numerous carbon fiber parts, and a new hood among other modifications. Just 2,200 examples are tipped to be built and, even though the company hasn’t announced U.S. pricing yet, it’s definitely going to be more expensive than the Competition.
