The demand for high-riding vehicles has sealed the fate of yet another family car in North America: the Buick Regal.

The mid-size model will be dropped after the 2020MY, according to MotorAuthority, who confirmed the information with the Buick and GMC Communications Manager Stuart Fowle.

“Buick continues to be ahead of the consumer shift towards SUV”, said Fowle. “In fact, nearly 90 percent of Buick sales to date this year have been crossovers. Although the Regal will no longer be offered in the U.S. and Canada, it will be sold in China, where demand for sedans remains significant.”

Review: New Buick Regal Has Some Tricks Up Its Sleeve

Taken into the sixth generation a couple of years ago, the Regal is the same car beneath the skin as the Opel and Vauxhall Insignia. Now, since GM sold the Euro brands to PSA, they had to pay them in order to keep making the Regal, so pulling the plug on it makes sense, especially since midsize saloons have fallen out of favor with customers.

The 2019 Regal can still be found on the company’s official website, with the Sportback starting at $25,070 and the TourX at $29,070. For the Avenir spec, you’re looking at a minimum of $35,765, whereas the GS has an MSRP of $39,070.

Now, the demise of the Regal, which comes after they already killed the LaCrosse and Cascada, will turn Buick into a crossover/SUV-only brand. Thus, their lineup will include the Encore, Envision and Enclave, along with their derivatives.

CarScoops contacted Buick so we will be updating this story with official information when we hear back from them.
