VW ID GTX Range Of Sporty EVs Tipped To Be In The Pipeline

With Volkswagen’s ID family of electric vehicles taking shape, they have started considering sporty versions of the regular models, which might use the GTX nameplate.

Much in the same vein as the GTI, GTD and GTE range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids, respectively, the GTX name should be reserved for the performance-oriented battery-electric models, according to Autocar, which adds that Volkswagen has already secured the moniker.

The first one to get the GTX treatment is expected to be the production version of the ID Crozz Concept, an electric crossover that’s already in the testing phase and could be named the ID.5. The British publication claims that a sporty variant of the Crozz is being prepped by Volkswagen at their Research and Development Center in Braunschweig, Germany, and is supposedly one year away.

The rumored GTX range will stand out courtesy of a few exterior upgrades, such as beefier body kits and different wheels, while on the inside, sportier trim will differentiate them from the regular versions.

The driving dynamics will be enhanced and the ‘X’ might stand for all-wheel drive. This means that Volkswagen would go for a dual-motor layout, with one electric motor at each axle. The outputs will vary depending on model and should be quite impressive, given that the rear-engined, RWD ID.3 is available with a 201 horsepower powertrain.
