Ford has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office revealing a windshield and roof design that seems to have been inspired by the Tesla Model X.
The patent, picked up by the Mach E Club forum, depicts a windshield on a Ford Mustang that extends above the heads of front-row passengers and forms part of the roof.
The Drive notes that much of the patent is dedicated to how such a design could retain the necessary rigidity. Ford’s solution involves a pair of strong roof rails and two curved horizontal rails found in the center of the roof, between the windshield and the rear window. In theory, this would make the car very strong in the event of a crash, but we don’t know whether Ford has gone ahead and conducted tests already or simply trademarking this solution.

Nonetheless, the windshield design depicted in the patent is quite intriguing even though it does look a little out of place on the Ford Mustang. We think such a design could be better suited to one of Ford’s many SUV or crossover models, but if it were to be used for a five-door vehicle, like the Mustang Mach-E, rather than a coupe like the regular Mustang, the center section between the windshield and rear window would need to be larger or the windshield itself could be made even bigger.
The patent was first filed back on May 14, 2018 and only published roughly one month ago. Evidently, Ford has been working on it for quite some time, but it remains unclear whether or not this roof ever becomes a reality.
