2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel Rated At 25 MPG Combined

The EPA has just released fuel economy figures for the 2020 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel and, unsurprisingly, it is the most fuel-efficient Wrangler ever.

On the highway, the Wrangler EcoDiesel returns 29 mpg, in the city it is rated at 22 mpg, and over the combined cycle, returns 25 mpg. By comparison, the current Wrangler with the available 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder mild-hybrid is rated at 25 mpg highway, 23 mpg city, and 24 mpg combined. What’s also particularly impressive about the EcoDiesel’s figures is that it is sold exclusively in four-door guise with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Last month, Jeep said the Wrangler EcoDiesel should do roughly 500 miles (805 km) to a tank. The 3.0-liter engine is good for 260 HP and 442 lb-ft (599 Nm) of torque. That torque figure, by the way, is the highest ever achieved from a Wrangler and promises to have a profound effect on how the off-roader drives.

Mated to the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is a TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission that has been calibrated for low rpm shifts. According to Jeep, there are more than 40 individual maps to optimize shift points for fuel economy, performance and 4×4 capabilities. All Wrangler EcoDiesel models come with a third-generation Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles and a 3.73 axle ratio.

Prices for the 2020 Wrangler EcoDiesel start at $39,290 for the base Sport trim model. Opting for the diesel costs $6,000 over a base 3.6-liter Wrangler Unlimited with a manual transmission and $4,500 over the 2.0-liter turbo with an automatic.
