Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has signed a contract to continue racing for the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team until the end of 2024.

The driver, who has previously won both the Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships, had a breakout year in 2019, securing two victories, 10 podiums and six pole positions. Moreover, he outscored his teammate, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, by 24 points and finishing fourth in the driver’s championship.

“I am very happy to be staying on with Scuderia Ferrari. This past season, driving for the most illustrious team in Formula 1 has been a dream year for me,” Leclerc said. “I cannot wait to enjoy an even deeper relationship with the team after what has been an intense and exciting 2019. I’m keen to see what the future holds and I can’t wait to get going again next season.”

Leclerc joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in early 2016 and made his Formula 1 debut in 2018 for the Sauber team before being promoted to Scuderia Ferrari after just a single season.

“With each passing race this year, our wish to extend our contract with Charles became ever more self-evident and the decision means he will now be with us for the next five seasons,” team principal Mattia Binotto said. “It demonstrates that Charles and the Scuderia have a firm future together. Charles has been part of our family since 2016 and we are more than proud of the results we are achieving with our Academy.”

Sebastian Vettel will remain as Leclerc’s teammate until at least the end of the 2020 season, having signed a contract extension in 2017.
