The Volkswagen Passat has always been a very good family hauler, especially in the estate body style, but if you live in Europe, then you should check out the latest GTE version.
Part of the facelifted iteration, the plug-in hybrid consists of a 1.4-liter petrol engine, an electric motor and a 13 kWh battery pack. It will do the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.2 seconds, thanks to the combined output of 215 hp (218 PS / 160 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, and if you go easy on the options and settle for the 17-inch wheels, then you will do up to 35 miles (56 km) on electricity alone.

The build quality could have some confuse it for a premium car and the equipment level does not disappoint either. Even the base spec comes with LED headlamps, Vienna leather pack, an 8-inch infotainment system, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, lane assist and adaptive cruise control with front assist. The GTE Advance, which is available from £48,860 ($63,375) in the UK, £2,550 ($3,308) more than the entry-level spec, adds LED Matrix headlamps, larger infotainment system and a few other gizmos.
Driving the 2020 Passat GTE is a calm and relaxing experience, especially in the Comfort mode. The transition between the internal combustion engine and electric motor is very smooth and so is the gear changing. The car offers lots of grip, providing confidence to those driving it, yet the steering is a bit on the light side.
