Sales of pickup trucks and hatchbacks remain strong in Australia despite a slight downturn in the local market.
For the fourth year in a row, the Toyota HiLux was the nation’s best-selling vehicle, shifting a total of 47,649 vehicles, comfortably ahead of the Ford Ranger in second place with 40,960 sales. These results mean that for the third year in succession, Australia’s two best-selling vehicles have been pickups.

Interestingly, Ranger 4×4 variants outsold Hilux 4×4 models, shifting a total of 37,004 units compared to the 36,325 Hilux 4×4 models sold. Toyota was able to close in on the Ranger’s strong led in the 4×4 pickup segment in December thanks to generous drive-away deals at the end of the year.
In Australia, the Ford Ranger represents 64 per cent of the brand’s total sales while the Toyota Hilux represents just 23 per cent of Toyota’s local sales.
While the Toyota Hilux remains in top position, the Japanese car manufacturer was unable to match the 51,705 units that it sold in 2018.

The country’s third and fourth most popular new vehicles are the Toyota Corolla (30,468 sales) and Hyundai i30 (28,378), showing that local consumers are also rather fond of small hatchbacks. The Mitsubishi Triton was the fifth best-selling vehicle, shifting 25,819 units.
Rounding out the top 10 best-selling vehicles were the Mazda CX-5, Mazda3, Toyota RAV4, Kia Cerato, and Mitsubishi ASX.
