The world of car customization is wide and varied and while we can understand and appreciate many of the interesting ways people modify their cars, some of us at least, never understood the ‘stance’ scene.
To make a vehicle ‘stanced’, owners typically lower their cars with springs, coilovers, or air suspension before fitting a set of large wheels, stretched tires, and adding ridiculous amounts of negative camber. On occasion, the result can be pretty cool but most of the time, we think its just plain foolish. Just look at this VW Golf GTI to see what we’re talking about.
This clip was recently shared on Tik Tok and shows a stanced VW Golf GTI reversing down a steep driveway and onto the street in California. In the process of doing so, it scrapes both its front and rear fascias due to the impossibly low ride height and the mind-boggling negative camber applied to the wheels.

To recap, not only does this Golf GTI look dumb but it is also very difficult to maneuver and would inevitably be very uncomfortable to drive at normal speeds. Despite this, the owner probably thinks they are the coolest thing since sliced bread.
The stance style of vehicle customization started in Japan in what is known locally as ‘VIP style’ and quickly gained popularity around the world. If you attend a car show featuring modified vehicles, no matter where you live, you’ll likely find some stanced cars.
