Lincoln and Rivian have confirmed they’re working together to develop an all-new electric vehicle based on the latter company’s skateboard platform.
The automakers are keeping details under wraps, but Lincoln said the model will feature “advanced and intuitive technologies” as well as their “Quiet Flight DNA.”
Little is known about the vehicle at this point but, earlier this week, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed the model would be a “very different product from our own SUV, but it’s still in the SUV space.” He also described it as an “impressive product.”

While Lincoln wouldn’t confirm the vehicle is a crossover, the company noted they have introduced four new SUVs – including the Aviator, Corsair and Navigator – in the past three years and this has helped their global sales climb seven percent on a year-over-year basis. The company also noted the models have enabled them to “deliver its best U.S. SUV sales in 16 years.”
In a statement, Lincoln President Joy Falotico said “Working with Rivian marks a pivotal point for Lincoln as we move toward a future that includes fully electric vehicles.” She added the upcoming model will “take Quiet Flight to a new place – zero emissions, effortless performance and connected and intuitive technology.”
Her sentiments were echoed by Scaringe who said “Our vehicle development partnership with Ford is an exciting opportunity to pair our technology with Lincoln’s vision for innovation and refinement.”
The MKZ Is Getting The Axe
While the Rivian-based model sounds promising, Lincoln used the announcement to reveal a bit of bad news – they’re killing the MKZ. The model will go out of production later this year as the Hermosillo Assembly Plant is being prepared to produce “new Ford vehicles.”
The company didn’t elaborate, but the news isn’t terribly surprising as the MKZ is effectively a rebadged Ford Fusion. However, it’s death flies in the face of Lincoln’s earlier ‘commitment’ to sedans. That being said, MKZ sales have been falling since 2016 and the company only sold 17,725 units last year.
