So Maserati confirmed yesterday their new sports car will be called MC20 but apparently more info has surfaced online about it.
Car magazine learned that the surprise new Maserati will have the engine in the middle and is going to be built on a carbon tub similar to that of the Alfa Romeo 4C. However the tub will be longer, wider and feature a longer wheelbase to offer a roomier cabin and create space for a bigger engine.

Speaking of which, according to the same report, Maserati is going to use a new twin-turbo V6 unit that was officially developed by themselves but rumors suggest that it’s the engine originally developed for the canceled Alfa Romeo GTV and 8C sports cars.
Maserati has apparently enlarged the engine’s displacement from 3.0 to 3.6 liters, with an unnamed FCA engineer saying: “Displacement costs only pennies, but pays back big bucks in power and torque.”
The new engine will be good enough for 600-plus HP in its base, probably electrified form. A V8 unit was reportedly ditched in favor of the smaller V6 while the only transmission choice will be an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic from Getrag, driving of course the rear wheels.
However that’s only the start for the new Maserati MC20, as the company is also working on a full hybrid variant of its V6 powertrain as well. That version is expected to feature an electrically powered front axle -and therefore all-wheel drive-, torque vectoring and a combined output of more than 700 HP.
Maserati is also planning a full electric version of the MC20 but that’s expected to follow on a later date. The new Maserati MC20 is going to be revealed this May, so stay tuned.
